Africa has never had a shortage of musical talent.

Every day, independent artists across Nigeria and the rest of the continent are creating music from bedrooms, home studios, professional studios, campuses, and local communities. Social media has made it easier than ever for an artist to be heard, but it has also created a new challenge: with so much music being released, what makes an emerging artist stand out?

At AfriNext Talent, discovering an artist isn't simply about finding a good song. I'm interested in the potential behind the music.
1. A Distinctive Sound
A good voice matters, but identity matters even more.

When I hear a new artist, I want to find something recognizable—something that separates that artist from the thousands of other people making music.

That doesn't necessarily mean inventing an entirely new genre. It can be a distinctive voice, delivery, production style, storytelling approach, cultural influence, or combination of sounds.

The question I ask is simple:

If I heard this artist again tomorrow without seeing the name, would I recognize them?

That's powerful.

2. Authenticity
African music has become increasingly global, and naturally, artists are influenced by sounds from around the world.

But global appeal shouldn't require losing your identity.

Some of the most interesting emerging artists are those who understand where they come from while remaining willing to experiment.

Language, culture, personal experiences, local sounds, and storytelling can become strengths rather than limitations.

Audiences can often recognize when an artist genuinely believes in what they're creating.

3. Consistency and Work Ethic
One great song can get someone's attention.

Building a career requires much more.

When evaluating an emerging artist, I want to see what happens after the first impressive record. Is the artist still creating? Are they improving? Are they promoting their work? Are they learning from feedback?
